BET 2017 Soul Train Awards went down last night at The Orleans arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. I not only had the pleasure of covering the red carpet, but I also watched the show and…well, my recap is inside.
As a journalist, you never know what to expect when it comes to covering a red carpet. The BET 2017 Soul Train Awards included me arriving around 2 p.m., only to not catch sight of a celebrity until around 4 p.m. But, once they arrived, it was on. Your favorite RnB musicians were in attendance. From Tank looking sexy in green to my first sighting and newly found obsession with Ro James. Boy, is he fine.
There’s something about a Black man with a gold tooth. Luke James and his dark chocolate self looked radiant in white. I didn’t really understand the oversized hoop earring but that’s what I liked it.
And I have to give a huge shout out to Robin Thede and her being the first African American woman to have her own late night talk show. Won’t he do it?! She was full of energy and looked absolutly gorgeous in a silk gold gown.
Toni and Tamar Braxton both sparkled on the carpet. I don’t want to get petty but I totally noticed that Tamar was NOT wearing her wedding ring but Toni WAS. And speaking of Toni and Tamar, their performances during the show were absolutely amazing. The youngest Braxton sister, Tamar, sung her hit “Blind”‘ Her voice gave me goosebumps; and unless my eyes were playing tricks on me, she teared up at the end. Toni, on the other hand, was honored with a Legend Award. Before taking the stage, my new imaginary boyfriend, Ro James paid homage by belting out a Toni Braxton hit, alongside Jessie J and Luke James.
I was beyond excited to finally hear Toni sing in-person and she didn’t disappoint. I will say, she was very openly sexual and bubbly on stage. Like, the kind of bubbly you become when you have a good man in your life. I see you, Birdman!
Last but certainly not least. Erykah Badu did an amazing job hosting the BET 2017 Soul Train Awards. She has such a fun personality and was able to find the light when having to deal with behind-the-sceen hiccups like retake and power outages.
112 closed the show with a performance of their popular hits like “Peaches & Cream” and my ultimate favorite, “Cupid”. They actually sung “Cupid” twice. I was totally here for that. The BET 2017 Soul Train Awards premieres November 26th at 8 p.m. ET. Set your TVs because you’ll be in a for a musical treat full of soul, sexy RnB and yes, Ro James.
